Constitution Day 2019: Why is it celebrated on 26 November?

Constitution Day 2019: This day is celebrated every year on 26 November in the country. On this special day Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, the creator of the Constitution, is remembered. On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India. It came into force on 26 January 1950.

It was declared by the government of India on 19 November 2015 to celebrate 26 November as Constitution Day every year. The announcement was made while laying the foundation stone of Ambedkar’s Statue of Equality Memorial.

Why Constitution Day on 26 November?

India got freedom on 15 August 1947. Since then, the requirement for a constitution was felt to govern the country. And then, the Constituent Assembly was formed under the leadership of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and the draft Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November 1949. That is the reason why Constitution Day is celebrated every year on 26 November.

The committee drafted the handwritten and calligraphed constitution in both Hindi and English. It did not use any sort of typing or print. Total of 284 members of the Constituent Assembly signed the document on 24 January 1950. It was implemented two days later on 26 January 1950.

Indian constitution is flexible and rigid both

There are many things that make the Indian constitution special among other country’s constitutions. Indian Constitution is neither rigid nor flexible. There are some articles of the Indian Constitution, which the Parliament can change even with a simple majority. This is why the Indian Constitution is called a flexible and soft constitution. At the same time, there are some articles in which 2/3 majority of the Parliament and the consent of half of the state governments of India are required to make changes, hence this constitution is called a rigid constitution.

World’s lengthiest constitution

Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar is considered as the father of Indian constitution. He has prepared the world’s lengthiest and bulkiest constitution. It was created after examining all the constitutions of the world. Once the constitution was drafted, it became the largest constitution in the world, comprising 448 Articles, 12 Schedules and 94 Amendments. It took 2 years 11 months and 17 days to prepare the Indian constitution.
