1. (a) 7.8 percent

The International Monetary Fund in the latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) has projected India to grow at growth rate at 7.4 percent in 2018 and 7.8 percent in 2019, up from 6.7 percent in 2017. The report stated that India in 2018 and 2019 would re-emerge as one of the fastest growing major economies.

2. (a) Vinod Khanna

Vinod Khanna, the veteran Hindi film actor, was conferred the 2017 Dadasaheb Phalke Award posthumously for his immense contribution to Indian cinema.

3. (d) China

China has stepped up its campaign against foreign espionage with a website in Mandarin and English encouraging people to report national security threats such as bids to overthrow the socialist system. According to the website, the informants will be rewarded for discovering espionage equipment or for tip-offs on anyone suspected of buying or selling state secrets.

Queen Elizabeth has appointed Prince Harry as a youth ambassador for the Commonwealth, a role that will see him encouraging young people to use the network of mostly former British colonies to address their challenges.

The Chief Minister of Gujarat has launched ‘Pocket Cop Project in order to ensure that the police force of the state is equipped with modern day technology. Under the project, every officer in charge of the police station, Investigating Officer, PCR van and officials handling the passport verification process shall be equipped with a smartphone enabled with internet connectivity.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ruled that disqualification of a lawmaker under Article 62 of the Constitution would be for lifetime. The ruling has dashed the hopes of former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of ever returning to power.

The New York Times and The New Yorker have jointly won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service on April 16, 2018 for exposing the powerful and wealthy sexual predators including one of the Hollywood’s most influential producers Harvey Weinstein. Their revelations inspired the global #MeToo movement that led to talks about gender and power dynamics in the workplace.

The Supreme Court of the United States has ruled that the US law calling for the deportation of immigrants convicted of certain violent crimes is unconstitutionally vague. The ruling came on a plea filed by convicted California burglar James Garcia Dimaya, a legal immigrant from the Philippines.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on April 19, 2018 launched the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the first-of-its-kind mission to discover planets outside the solar system, including some that could support life.

12. (b) Qatar

Qatar has announced the approval of a draft law on regulating the ownership and use of properties by foreigners. The draft law rules that non-Qataris might own and use properties under specific conditions. The law applies to land space including buildings and residential units, in addition to the detachment units in residential complexes.
